We’re not sure what’s in the water, but Datawites, as our residents are dubbed, are an active and generous group – charity abounds!
There are several member-based, non-profit groups, such as the Dataw Conservancy and the Dataw Historic Foundation, plus numerous other charitable organizations and events. For example, each Veterans Day, the community honors veterans over a few days with a ceremonial parade, golf tournament, breakfast, lunch – having raised $130,000 to date through these events. Even the staff at Dataw gives generously, one example being Assistant Golf Pro Chris Fearn organizing a charity Golf Marathon, where each year he single-handedly raises over $20,000 for veterans organizations such as Tee It Up for the Troops, the On Course foundation, the Green Beret Foundation, and more — all to help injured service men and women.
Dataw members can be found in the local community swinging a hammer to build a Habitat for Humanity House, picking up litter or combing the beach for trash or to spot & log sea turtle activity. On-island, members plan charity runs, tend to a butterfly garden, and hold numerous fundraising and awareness-raising events. In June, the Dataw Splash USTA tennis event draws players from across the US and raises money for Special Olympics.
When not working towards greater good for the community-at-large, members value fitness and fellowship. Many sports groups and organized fitness opportunities are available, in addition to more than twenty “Clubs within a Club” – member-based organizations formed around common interests, such as cards, boating and art.
With so many options to get involved, new members appreciate being paired with an Ambassador to learn about some of the island’s offerings.
For those who are called by the water, Dataw Island keeps you close to the sea.

Several community docks are also available from which to drop a crab trap, launch a kayak or catch a sunset.
