March Madness in Southwest Florida
The highly anticipated return of college basketball’s March Madness tournament has the entire country pretty excited right now. No matter who you’re rooting for, this tournament has proven to provide thrills for everyone up until the final buzzer year in and year out. So why is Golf Life Navigators writing about March Madness? Simple. Six members of the Golf Life Navigators team have either graduated from or currently attend Florida Gulf Coast University who’s basketball team occupies the #14 seed in the West this year. FGCU, also known as “Dunk City”, is scheduled to play the #3 seed Florida State Seminoles Thursday night March 16th in Orlando.
But we’re not the only fans that FGCU has outside of its student body… We can tell you from personal experiences that on game day most of the seats in Alico Arena are occupied by both seasonal or permanent residents of the Fort Myers/Naples area. It’s actually really cool and it’s safe to say that the Eagles provide all of southwest Florida with year long excitement. Along with the exhilaration FGCU can provide through any of their sports team, you can’t overlook the numerous amounts of MLB Spring Training programs that call southwest Florida home such as the Boston Redsox or the Minnesota Twins.
Figuring out how to occupy all of your new free time is one of the most daunting aspects of retirement, but down here in southwest Florida it’s really pretty easy. With over 150 golf courses, miles of white sand beaches, endless high end shopping and dining options, and a university with top sports teams, finding something to do is quite simple. These envy-inducing experiences are not something that can be lived being shut down November-April up north; they are exclusive to those who choose to live their retired lives leisurely here in southwest Florida.
