Members gather at Elk River Club from all over to escape the summer heat and enjoy the ideal temperature for an active lifestyle. At an elevation of 5000 feet, the mountains surrounding Elk River complete the perfect backdrop for members to perfect their golf game or enjoy the famous trout fishing along one-mile of the Elk River that meanders through the property. In this cool western NC climate, the temperature in July averages at 77 degrees in the day and hovers around 57 degrees at night.
Residents of Elk River enjoy the surrounding views of the region’s prominent mountains, including Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, and Grandfather Mountain. It is an easy drive to Banner Elk, Blowing Rock and Boone for year-round dining, shopping and exciting outdoor adventures. Appalachian State University and Lees McRae College offer a variety of cultural experiences that members enjoy.
At Elk River, our members make us who we are and form the incredible community many enjoy calling home for several months out of the year. As a private, member-owned club, Elk River Club membership is by invitation only and golf membership is limited to 245 members. We offer both resident and non-resident memberships.
Elk River Club is home to Jack Nicklaus’ first Signature Golf Course in North Carolina where the altitude ranges from 3,450 feet to 4,650 feet. Since it opened in 1984, it has remained one of North Carolina’s Top Ten Golf Courses and one of the most beautiful courses in the state. Nicklaus’ design deliberately integrates with the natural topography and beauty that is characteristic of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The meticulously maintained mountain course winds around the Elk River, shimmering lakes, and tree-lines fairways.

The short 13th plays to an elevated, almost blind two-tiered green that gets your attention even with a wedge in your hands. Elk River Club has many exciting social events each year for members and their guests, such as cookouts held beside the Elk River and at the beautiful Equestrian Center. The first-class service by the Food & Beverage staff that makes each event unique. Friendships created off and on the course culminate through these events around the Club.
Italian Night, Prime Rib Night, and Cocktails by the River only begin to describe the dining experience at Elk River Club. With ever changing menus with enticing themes, and even parties at the stables, members never tire of the food and dining throughout the summer.
Elk River’s Executive Chef, Eric Hobbs, has been preparing formal and informal culinary delights for more than 25 years here. The Elk River Clubhouse includes an informal bar and grille, formal dining room, and several executive rooms that may be used for private parties or meetings. Club members and their guests enjoy the finest in casual gourmet dining and top-rated wine selections
The Equestrian Center appeals to both members who own horses and those who simply enjoy casual riding. Situated at 4,500 feet, the magnificent 22-stall equestrian center and 40 acres of highland pastures and paddocks are horse heaven! Adjacent are an additional 140 acres of riding preserve and miles of beautiful nature trails for horse and rider to explore.
Within the stable there are 22 stalls, two tack rooms, inside and outside wash racks, and a comfortable member’s lounge for relaxation after a long trail ride. Adjacent to the stable are rings for riders to practice riding and jumping. Members enjoy personalized riding programs overseen by some of the best riding professionals in North Carolina.
One of the most unique and convenient advantages for Elk River residence is the 4,600-foot, on-premise private airport.
The well-maintained runway and available private hangers easily accommodate both private and corporate aircraft. A manned security gate controls access to the hangars and private airstrip. The airport is for the exclusive use of Elk River property owners and their guests. Landing, usage and parking fees are billed annually or per landing.
Elk River’s four Har-Tru courts are conditioned for comfortable play and are ideal for every level of tennis enthusiast. Harold “H” Wetzel, Director of Tennis, and his staff host weekly mixers, private and group lessons, summer kids’ camps, charity tournaments, and exciting pro exhibitions.
The unique pool complex consists of a lap pool and spa for the adults, and a sloped beach entry and bubblers for the kids. The lap pool has a maximum depth of four and one-half feet. The swimming complex includes men’s and ladies’ locker rooms, saunas, the fitness center and a grille. Perfectly suited for parties and gatherings, the outdoor pool area is beautifully landscaped with a stunning waterfall and has a large deck for entertaining.
The state-of-the-art Wellness Center is a complete workout facility that includes top-of-the-line fitness equipment, a private training room, a group workout room and electronic Fitness On Demand.
Group Classes include yoga classes, golf stretching, cycling and more to help members improve their golf swing, tennis game and overall wellness. Elk River’s trainers know the right approach and pace to make each class both inspiring and challenging.
The headwaters of the Elk River begin from the Northwestern slopes of Peak Mountain in Avery County (NC) and end at the Watauga River in Carter County (TN).
Elk River members and their guests enjoy North Carolina catch and release fly-fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout along the stretch of river that winds throughout the community. Ponds throughout the golf course are stocked with large-mouth bass and blue gill for easily accessible fishing from the banks and docks.
Riverside Park includes a deluxe playground plus an incredible new dog park nestled along the Elk River with a path leading to waterside decks, cabana and picnic areas. The unofficial afternoon “Yappy Hour” provides the perfect opportunity for socializing with members and their four-legged fur-kids.
Elk River Members enjoy sunsets gazing west, deep into the Tennessee mountains from the sprawling deck of Robbins Sunset Park. This newly redesigned space has room for picnic gatherings, live music with friends or a sunset glass of wine with someone special. A custom mountain map identifies many of the mountain peaks within view, expanding the experience from this mountaintop perch. As the newest gathering space in Elk River, the Robbins Sunset Park has a beautiful view waiting for all occasions!
